Overview

The National Council of Churches is the largest ecumenical body in the United States, representing 38 Christian faith groups and over 40 million adherents. It was formed in 1908 as the Federal Council of Churches and has since grown through mergers with other ecumenical organizations. Today, it works to promote unity, justice, and peace among its member communions, which include mainline Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, African-American, evangelical, and historic peace churches. The NCC is led by Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, who serves as Interim President and General Secretary.
